Montauk Adventure

The slow run to Montauk from Point Pleasant gave Capt. Bill, Capt. Tex, and Capt. Rich a chance to rest before the whirlwind dive adventure with RJ and the group from Treasure Cove Divers began.  An early morning start on Friday put us just east of Block Island on the German WW II sub U853.  As usual, RJ's group was a pleasure to have on board.  They got down to business quickly and splashed for some incredible dives. The U853 is one of the few WW II era subs that lies within easy reach of recreational divers. Two dives, great meals, and then off to an evening on Block Island.  Saturday was a leisurely departure for the John jack.  As the divers slept, the John Jack made it's way to the next dive site, the USS Bass. This160 foot deep wreck is an American sub that lies just south of Block Island and is considered a prime dive site. RJ's group quickly geared up and before long, the stories and laughs could be heard as the divers exchanged stories on the dive deck.  Saturday night, we were back on Block Island for the overnight stay; Sunday was another opportunity to visit another local wreck and share more stories.  The mystery of the missing lift bag will be retold for years.  One diver sent "treasure" to the surface, but we believe a sail boat flying a foreign flag stole the prize before we could recover it.  When approached, and questioned about the lift bag, the denials were thick as a New England fog bank.  WE could have boarded the ship and searched it, but we didn't want to create an international incident over a rusted relic.  Besides, Capt. Rich's record at sea is mostly clean.  RJ's group departed on Sunday afternoon, and now the boat is preped and ready to head out to the wreck of the Andrea Doria.  This will be the first of three Doria trips on the John Jack schedule.  Stay tuned for updates on the John Jack's Montauk adventure.
