ALGOL DIVE TRIP Sunday May 30, 2010
Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 7:52AM Neptune smiled as the John Jack steamed from the marina in Manasquan, NJ to the USS Algol, a Victory ship sunk in 1991 as part of the NJ Artificial Reef Program.
We arrived as a 6-pack fishing boat decided to weigh anchor and head for greener pastures – or so they thought. The grapple they used to hold their place on the wreck was caught and they weren't going anywhere.
Lucky for them and thanks to RJ of Treasure Cove Divers ( http://www.treasurecovedivers.com/), the John Jack had 16 eager divers aboard. After Terry and Brian set the hook, the irrepressible Bob Boucher headed down and freed the 6-pack’s grapple, which was thoroughly snagged on the railing of the wreck. Sunny skies gave us decent light to go along with 48 degree water temp., 20 ft viz,and a spotty current on the deck. I recovered a small SS cleat with brass screws that might clean up well. It is more likely that the cleat came from a fishing or dive boat than the Algol, which was striped by salvors before it was sunk and by divers ever since.
Other than a couple of lobsters that made the trip home with us, there wasn't much food brought home. But there was food down there, including some absolutely HUGE blackfish loafing around the deck at 100 fsw while some athletic Pollack sprinted by periodically.
The seas flattened as everyone settled in for the ride home.
It was a great day to be on the ocean – or under it.
