Lana Carol - April 28, 2007
The day dawned clear & calm, just what a boat Captain wants to see for the first trip of the year. Today was the day to “light the fires and kick the tires” But unlike Captain Ron, the crew of the John Jack was prepared for the season. Right down to the pantry. My wife Susan spent over $600. Provisioning the boat. Even if the diving was poor, we would never go hungry !!
A good sized group was at the dock loading by 9 AM. As it was the first trip of the season, we departed at a leisurely 10 AM. Most of the passengers were from PA. Today. We bounced a few sets of #s on the way to the Lana Carol. An intact scallop dredge sunk upright in 90 Ft. Of water. A simple, and picturesque wreck to start the season off.
Divers had nice conditions both above & below the surface. With a gentle rolling sea, the John Jack stood at anchor eager to perform her duties as a diving platform. The boat was resplendent in her new paint and graphics. She looked every bit the proud pretty lady she is. One of our new mates, Vern set the hook for us, possibly setting a new record in the length of time he took. He made up for his tardiness by recovering a nice porcelain mug, during his dive. The divers dropped into the water in groups of 2s & 3s. Soon, the deck was clear. The 20 Ft. Vis, made it easy to navigate the wreck, but the 42 Deg. Water Temp. kept the dives short. In less than 2 hours, every one was back onboard.
Once back on board I handed out hot soup to the cold divers. With all the divers back onboard, Gene went in & pulled the hook, setting us free to return to the dock. A hot lunch , of my wife’s making was served as we motored in. Again we paused to check out a few spots, nothing promising was found. We sailed into Manasquan on glassy seas. Captain Steve made short work of backing into our new slip. The first trip of the year is bitter sweet, it is great to be back out on the water, but part of me will miss spending weekends at home with my Family. All & all it was a perfect trip to start the season off with.
