Trip Report 4-16-05
The John Jack left at 10am for a leisurely season opener. The boat moved easily through the 3 ft. seas as the turbos kicked in and the boat sped up. We decided to go o the Relief Ship, a short 40 minutes from the dock. The back deck was a buzz with talk of the 05 season as divers suited up.
Once on the bottom at 105 ft., the divers were greeted with 40 degree temperatures and a murky 5 ft of vis. The surge left over from the previous weeks storm made navigating the wreck an obstacle course of floating lines and sharp rusty steel. But being staunch Northeast divers, we persevered and dove on. Even though conditions were less than perfect we were happy to be back in the water. Best of all the 05 Dive Season was officially under way.
This season we will visit some of our old favorites as well as many new sites. We start off with shallow 1 tankers, and progress to deeper, longer trips. Some of the highlights for the season are a cosmetic face lift for the boat in May to restore her to like new condition, right now she looks like she been rode hard and put away wet too many times. In June we move to Hatteras N.C. for three weeks for Caribbean-like diving. Shortly after returning from Hatteras we head East to Montauk. Once in Montauk, we will dive wrecks around Block Island, the Doria, Sebastian, and U-550. In August we return home for several weeks of local diving and a little R&R. In September we head south again to Cape May. From this Southern location, we will hit wrecks such as the St. Augustine, Northern Pacific, S-5, and Marine Electric. Mid September we return home and run out the rest of the season form our home base in Staten Island.
This year we have added a computer with a 20 inch monitor in the wheelhouse, this is to aid us in our search for new wrecks. It is our intention to chase down a few “unknown” hang numbers each weekend, we will keep you updated with the progress.
We would like to Thank You for visiting our web page. Please return here often to look for news, updates, changes, and addictions to the schedule. Hope to see you all on the boat this summer
Good Diving
