Night Diving

As you peruse the new John Jack schedule, you will see that we have many open boat night dives. I have noticed in the past few seasons, very few night dives are offered. At one time, there was a night available most every week, sometimes, on both Wed and Fri nights. Often by several different boats on the same days. Where have all the night divers gone?? I think you are still right here in the surrounding area, jonesing for night dives. Prove me right, and share the night.

For those of you unfamiliar with night dives, I will give you a synopsis. For a night dive, you leave the dock somewhere between 6 & 7:30 PM. You take a relatively short ride to a local site, generally 30 - 45 min away. Once on site, the boat anchors in. In general it is not yet dark. Some divers jump right in and watch day turn to night on the bottom, some prefer to wait until full dark, before jumping in. Once on the bottom, a good dive light is a necessity. Dive lights have come a LOOOONG way from the old Darrell Allen, bug divers lights of yore. They are like flicking a Bic, compared to the great dive lights available today. Divers then search the bottom for dinner, generally in the form of lobster. Lobsters are nocturnal, and come out of their deep holes at night to forage. This makes them much easier to catch. It can also be a good time to spearfish also. You can often find large Taug hiding in holes. Generally the dives are of moderate depth, and require little or no decompression. Once back onboard we band the lobster for safe keeping. We crack open a refreshment of our choice, and before you can finish eating your hot nachos, you see the inlet come into view. In general, we should be back at the dock before 10 PM or so. We throw our gear in our cars, then head to a local bistro such as Frankie’s for a well deserved late night burger. A perfect end to a great evening.

We need a group of at least 6 to sail. Call the Captain directly to book a spot. I hope these dives will be as popular this summer, as they were in summers past. If we have good participation, I will add more night dives as needed. Please take note, that night dives are also offered on Fri nights as well as mid-week.
