Bunks are on a first-come, first-served basis. On day trips, there is no guarantee you will have a bunk; on overnight trips, every passenger gets their own bunk.  Please remember that your trip begins the morning of your trip, not the night before.  Loading the night before is a courtesy extended by the Captain.
